Blackberry PlayBook OS 2.1 beta released

RIM have released a beta version of the next BlackBerry PlayBook OS to developers, which brings a number of enhancements and improvements over version 2.

Some of the key changes include better HTML5 support, improved portrait support, better folders, full device encryption and separate windows for each Android app.

RIM’s BlackBerry PlayBook tablet struggled to take off in the market, but a combination of hefty price drops as well as the ability to run Android apps and an updated much-better OS means the company’s tablet has finally become attractive to end users.

However, the writing is already on the wall for RIM, with job cuts following executive departures and it’s quite likely that should the company go down, the PlayBook OS development could end.
