Charles Dunstone, the founder of independent retailer Carphone Warehouse has been given the honour of a knighthood for his services to the mobile communications industry and for his charity work.
Sir Charles Dunstone launched Carphone Warehouse in 1989 using £6,000 of savings and in 2000, the Group floated with a market capitalisation of £1.7bn, netting Sir Charles a whopping £635m fortune.
Carphone Warehouse remains one of the biggest independent mobile retailers in Europe and currently has 1,700 UK retail stores, whilst Sir Charles also serves a member of The Prince’s Trust council and sponsors the Fulwood Academy in Preston.
Carphone Warehouse has become a household name and despite dropping out of the US, there are no signs that the company is slowing down in any way with Sir Charles aiming to dominate an increasingly competitive industry.
